Évangéline and Gabriel are characters in Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's poem, "Évangéline : Un conte d’Acadie" After its publication in 1847, the poem became very popular. It tells the story of Évangéline Bellefontaine and Gabriel Lajeunesse, a young Acadian couple separated by deportation and reunited at the end of their lives. These two characters have become symbols of the deportation and perseverance of the Acadian people.

Each year, two young people are selected to play the roles of Evangeline and Gabriel during the Acadian festival in Clare. These two people participate in several festival activities to represent these characters.
